StoryBoards - Terror in the Night



As one of our first practical tasks, we were told to create our own story board based on the tittle "Terror in the Night". It was suppose to start as a horror genre film. The structure for the original story was:

- Three friends walk through woods (At night)
- Everyone gets freaked out by wolf howl
- One friend leaves, gets eaten by wolf
- Wolf is revealed to remaining friends
- Two friends try to escape, one gets eaten
- Last one escapes

The numbered structure was: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10.
We found that this structure seemed to lean more towards Prop's Theory, as we had made it so that the characters each are introduced creating an attachment or recognition with a viewer. The characters we made each seemed to follow one of Prop's narrative functions.


From this we then where told to move the fourth frame to the beginning of the story.

The new structure was: 4,1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10
I didn't realise at first but the story itself had changed quite dramatically. A small relocation of a scene meant that the story no longer followed the same path, and that it now leaned more towards Todorov's theory. It now started with an equilibrium, the three characters alone in the woods. The disruption followed with the character leaving, this is then followed by a conflict between the other characters and the wolf attack. Next the last character would escape, providing resolution, however the ending would be a new equilibrium, where the girl would be alive, but alone.

The next structure we made was aimed to follow Strausses theory.
The numbered structure became: 10,2,4,7,3,5,6,7,1,9,8

This structure was quite a contrast as the numbers were changed a lot more than last time.
Struasses theory was based around binary Oppositions moving the narrative forward.

Post 1+2 (Brief+Genre)



Brief

The brief for my media coursework assignment is:

"The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes".

The coursework will consist of four parts:
-Research
-Planning
-Filminng
-Post Production

How can genre aid you in relation to your brief?

Genre is constantly in a state of flux, this means that genres are no longer fixed or "classic". This means that I will have a greater range of possibilities when planning the film, as I will be able to be flexible with the decided 'genre'.
